Dorset is an area of unspoilt and wonderfully varied rolling down-land and heaths, hidden valleys, ancient field patterns, beaches and cliffs. Visitors can spend time exploring the picturesque towns and villages in the area. Lyme Regis, a traditional seaside town full of atmosphere on the county border with Devon. Shaftesbury offers one of England's best-known and most picturesque sights, Gold Hill and the pretty town of Sherborne is known for its two Castles and superb 15th century Abbey. The charming ancient market town of Wimborne nestles between the rivers Allen and Stour. The relaxed Saxon town of Christchurch lies in the shadow of its magnificent 11th century Priory Church. Further east lies Wareham, a pretty Saxon town on the banks of the River Frome.

Bournemouth, Poole, Swanage & Purbeck has some of the best beaches in the UK, with all that one would expect from major resorts. The 19th century novelist and poet Thomas Hardy of Wessex fame lived for much of his life in Dorset. The area's other most famous resident was probably TE Lawrence, 'Lawrence of Arabia', who lived the final years of his life in picturesque Cloud's Hill.
